Dear Families,

Friday 27 October marked the celebration of World Teachers’ Day in Australia. On that special day, it was important to recognise and express heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous work that teachers contribute to the education of our future generations.

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has aptly themed this day celebration as "Hats off to Teachers". This theme underscores the remarkable impact that teachers have on students' academic and personal development. Indeed, teachers are the driving force behind the academic achievements of our students and are instrumental in shaping their futures.

At LHS, teachers have been busy providing some extraordinary and authentic learning opportunities to our students this term. These include but are not limited to; Year 10 road ready, transition experiences, DARE camp to Melbourne, Band Floriade performances, Year 10 Band Camp to Qld, Model UN, sporting teams and competitions, Year 8 movie excursion, Yr 10 Paul Dillon presentation, Dance Festival and Year 10 Market Day. All of these experiences are worthwhile to students and allow them to either broaden their perspectives through source material and/or demonstrate skills and learning they have been working on in class in authentic performance-based tasks. None of the experiences are essential or mandatory in the scope of our delivery of the Australian Curriculum. I am exceptionally proud of the passionate teachers we have here at Lyneham High School. They continue to go above and beyond for the benefit of students. They take joy in student learning and achievement, and they take pride in how much each and every student gains for the planned experiences. It makes the added effort absolutely worth it. A cheer is warranted, hip hip hooray, for the Lyneham High School staff this world teachers’ day. Of course, our students are also to be commended for grabbing these opportunities with both hands, putting their best foot forward, representing their school and demonstrating school values.

I was most privileged to attend the Future of Education Summit last week with three of our inspiring Year 9 students: George, Livia and Mar. The event was attended by Minister Yvette Berry, educational leaders from all government, non-government and independent schools in the ACT system and most importantly invited students. I was so proud of our three representatives as they shared their ideas confidently, showed a considered and broad perspective on equity and represented the voice of the young people of the ACT.

Term four is a busy one. With culmination of learning experiences, celebrations, transitions to and from new settings and year levels and setting up 2024 with the election of new school leaders, selection into special programs and the choice and allocation of electives to be studied for the coming year. I urge all students to stay connected through home group and listen carefully to all student announcements as home group is an important channel for communication and will assist students to stay connected with all events.

Kind Regards

Jacqui Ford

2023 Audrey Fagan Enrichment Grant

Lyneham HS Student Receives ACT Government Grant

Congratulations to Eram Nikolita Haque
Year 8 student,  Eram Nikolita Haque has received the 2023 Audrey Fagan Enrichment Grant from the Australian Capital Territory Government.

The Audrey Fagan Enrichment Grant, named in honour of the territory's since-deceased chief police officer, is awarded to women with leadership potential who want to develop and implement projects to help them achieve their goals.

This grant, aimed at empowering girls, young women, non-binary, and gender-diverse young individuals, recognises Eram Nikolita Haque's project in which she will undertake small research on Selective Mutism, a rare disabling condition, prepare an informative wall magazine on this topic utilising her academic, art and drawing skills and present these informative wall magazines (combining with her musical performances) among teenage girls and women with multicultural and diverse backgrounds for raising awareness and fostering inclusion. Receiving the grant would not only aid in her personal development but also make the Canberra community aware of a lesser-known condition.

Human rights and social inclusion obsessed Eram Nikolita Haque's dedication and passion for positively impacting the lives of those affected by a rare condition have earned her a grant of $1,000 to support her initiative. The Audrey Fagan Enrichment Grant program received numerous remarkable applications from young women across diverse backgrounds, all seeking to enhance their skills, knowledge, and contributions in their respective areas of interest.

In a letter addressed to Eram Nikolita Haque, the Australian Capital Territory's Deputy Chief Minister, Yvette Berry MLA, expressed her excitement about Nikolita's successful application and invited Nikolita and her family to a congratulatory afternoon tea on Wednesday 11 October, at the Canberra Museum & Gallery Theatre to celebrate this achievement. The event allowed Nikolita to meet other inspiring girls and women leaders and share her endeavour.
Term 4 SPIRIT Focus:
Gratitude

This term in SPIRIT (Social and Emotional Program), we are focusing on Gratitude and Forgiveness. During our recent assembly, students were shown a video and supporting information about the benefits of gratitude. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

The two challenges we have introduced to the students are:
  1. To write two or three thank you letters this term.
  2. Showing appreciation at school with the simple words: thank you.

Challenge 1- Thank you Letters

What are they? A handwritten or typed note that describes how this person has demonstrated kindness or assisted you. You can collect the template from the library or the front office.

Ideas:

Parent, Grandparents,  Sibling, Family members, Front Office Staff, BSO, Teacher, Friend, Sports Coach, Tutor, Boss, Work Colleague, Dance teacher, Art teacher, Piano teacher or a Maths Tutor.

STEP 1: What do I write? Describe what they have done to assist you. Give 1-2 examples of when this occurred and discuss the impact it has had on you.

STEP 2: Give it to the special person. If you feel comfortable, read it aloud.  We would love to hear how it went. Feel free to share it with your homegroup teacher, Miss Simmons, your classroom teachers, the front office staff, Miss Tutin, Year Co’s, Miss A or Miss McGann or anyone at Lyneham High!

Challenge 2- Two Simple words:

Ideas for saying thank you at school:
  • When someone has done something kind
  • At the end of a lesson
  • A friend who has assisted you
  • If someone has helped you at the front office or assisted you when you were unwell
  • If you enjoyed the lesson
  • After a teacher organised an event or excursion for you
Please have a conversation with your child about these challenges for term four. You might want to ask them who they are going to write a gratitude letter to, why they chose this person and what they might include.
Languages at Lyneham

Classes in English, EALD, French and Indonesian have successfully begun their term 4 units.

In French and Indonesian there are interesting activities, such as the year 8 French and Indonesian EXPO in the hall and at the end of term 3, the cooking of crêpes, picnics and fruit tasting were undertaken.

On Monday a Crime Fiction Cinema excursion occurred  for some year 8 English students in Civic. They viewed  ‘A Haunting in Venice', based on the novel ‘A Halloween Party', by Agatha Christie.

Certificates for the ICAS Assessments in English and Writing have been distributed and are available for collection from the Languages Staffroom. On the reverse, there is a clear breakdown of each students’ score.

Year 7 English is undertaking a taster course on Shakespeare, studying his life, times and a few of the plays. Among the winners of a drawing contest on ‘The Globe’ theatre were Nicchole Fulgencio and Trudy Magee.
Expressions of Interest

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

We are looking at splitting our Basketball and Football/Futsal squads to be gender specific due to the different game play structures and equipment that is used within these two sports. Our aim is to further develop the students specifically within their game plan/strategies and use of equipment so that they are getting the most out of their sessions and they are then tailored adequately.

We are asking for expressions of interest to see how viable this will be for 2024, could you kindly complete the following:
  • Form for current SEAL Students
  • Form for current NON-SEAL students interested in the split

We ask that the form be completed by Friday 3 November for planning purposes. Our aim is to provide an update week 6, term 4, 2023.

If you have any questions regarding this opportunity please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Kate Davoren through the inbox: LHSSEAL@ed.act.edu.au

Thank you and looking forward to seeing your responses.

Lyneham High School Term 3 School Sport Report

Term 3 saw an outstanding term’s participation and results with School Sport. A massive congratulations on the students efforts as we look to progress into our last term of school sport. Students are encouraged to think about self nominating themselves and others for the major sportsperson of the year award towards the conclusion of term 4.

Capital Futsal Secondary

The Capital Futsal day was really fun and successful. The boys won all their games in pool play matches, finishing on top in their pool. Unfortunately, the boys fell narrowly short in the semi-final to Harrison School who played a tactical brand of Futsal. Overall, the team had a great day and their behaviour demonstrated LHS values.

Mr Kelly

ACT Secondary Table Tennis

A number of Lyneham High students participated in the ACT Table Tennis championships this year. We were lucky enough to  nominate a girls year 9/10 team and 4 Para teams to battle against both public and private schools across the territory. Our Small Group Program students have been training every week in preparation for this event. Lyneham High performed exceptionally well throughout the day, with one of our Para teams coming in second, only after a three way first place tie and counting back points/games won.  Lyneham High very reluctantly handed back the year 9/10 trophy, and the Para trophy we have won for the past 4 years. A commendable effort by all who participated!

Miss Lee

Secondary North Football

The Year 7/8 boys enjoyed a competitive day of football at Dickson playing fields. In extreme weather conditions with high winds and rainfall, the boys accessed their resilience and teamwork skills to make it to the semi finals before losing out to Daramalan College in a close game. The boys are to be commended for their efforts on the day and look forward to seeing them continue to work together in the coming years as a team.

The Year 7/8 Girls football team achieved wonderful results for 2023. The girls won all round games and came first at Northside losing just to SFX in the final after a tightly contested match. Through achieving this they progressed to ACT Finals day. ACT Finals day the girls had two wins and a loss and unfortunately didn't make it to the finals on the day. They constantly upheld our school values and displayed excellent teamwork, fair play and we are looking forward to them continuing their football for next year.

The 9/10 Boys Football Gala Day turned out some awesome weather after a few early scares in the morning. This positive start flowed through the day as the boys played some fantastic football, only losing to JPC in pool play. The boys fell agonisingly short in the semi-final, losing 1-0 to Harrison who played some questionable tactics booting the ball out, utilising the short halves with no time-on once they had the goal advantage. Overall, the team were very well behaved and represented Lyneham proudly.

Secondary North Girls Netball

This year we had a huge amount of talent representing Lyneham at the Northside Girls Netball Gala Day. Our 7/8 and 9/10 teams both did a fantastic job making it to finals whilst also demonstrating poise, respect and fair play. The 7/8 team made it to the quarter-finals, where in a hard fought match only just lost out to SFX. The 9/10 team got all the way through to the semi-finals against Harrison, narrowly missing out on reaching the top 2, but showed great determination right up to the final whistle. Thank you to all who attended, Lyneham will be lucky to have you represent us again in the future.

Secondary North Boys Netball

The 9/10 boys performed wonderfully throughout the North Boys Netball tournament. Many of them were new to sport, but competed really well against other schools in the region. The boys were super supportive and did a wonderful job helping each other throughout the games. The boys ended the day with 3 wins and 3 losses, the last being a make or break nail biter. Sadly they missed out on the finals by the barest of margins. Also a massive thank you to Claire F who was the Lyneham High School referee for the day.

North Region Track & Field/ ACT

This year in track & field, Lyneham High School took an astounding 42 participants to the AIS for the north region event which Lyneham High School coordinated. All participants worked incredibly hard and Lyneham High School managed to finish in 5th place overall on points. A massive thankyou and appreciation also to the 5 year 10 POSE students that helped coordinate the event on the day including Afham Jahan, Matt Gaisbauer, Josh Powrie, Renzo Abrar, Ayaan Humayun.

From the north region event we had 19 students qualify for the ACT event held at Woden Athletics Track. On a warm and windy sunny day, all participants competed to the very best of their ability and are to be commended for their efforts and representation of our school. From the day we had some outstanding results including 3 ACT records and also a first place. Sierra Jaques managed to continue her ways in the north region event by breaking the ACT records for both the 100 and 200m events. Zac Barwell also broke the 800m sprint multi class record on the day. Brayden Worth placed first in discus and competed in 10 events, a number of which he qualified for Nationals in. A massive congratulations to all athletes and to those who compete at National’s in Perth in December.
