Hello families and friends

It has been a busy and productive term in a wide variety of ways. The focus on the learning and opportunities to demonstrate the learning has been amazing and it is a credit to the staff of Lyneham High School. The student work shown has been outstanding and the students should be as proud of their efforts as they should be of what they have been able to demonstrate and produce.

The Lyneham High School bands participated in the Australian National Eisteddfod last week and boy did they make us proud! The work and organisation involved in providing this rich opportunity for students has been immense and I would like to thank the music team – Tim Bowyer, Owen Cusick, Fran Nagy and William Houghton for truly going above and beyond in making sure this experience came to fruition. Also, we had a large number of parent volunteers who helped us move gear to and from LPAC (the eisteddfod uses Lyneham High School's music gear) to whom we are so thankful. It is a great demonstration of how our program connects with our parent/wider school community. All the students performed amazingly well and represented Lyneham High School with pride and sincerity.

We are all so proud of our students and amazed by all the hard work, discipline, self-regulation and commitment they have demonstrated in working towards their eisteddfod performances. Congratulations.

Last week, we held an “Indonesian Expo” and “French Expo” in the school’s hall. All of the students involved were excited and willing to discuss their game, festival, holiday or traditional harvest. Each group created a poster and a series of questions for the participants to answer. The interactivity was extremely engaging for the students and staff.

Thank you to our awesome languages teachers for organising this wonderful enrichment activity: Clare Douglass, James Moore, Olga Spivak, Sarah McLaughlan and Jodi Adams.

Earlier this week, we celebrated our “Science Fair” with seventy year 7 students setting up their projects in the corridor and classrooms. The ideas were vast and varied! They demonstrated how students have worked together to inquire into the world around them to produce an experiment that explains their learning to others. It was clear through conversations with the students that they were prepared and passionate about their projects. In response to being asked “where will you use this learning in ten years’ time?”, every group was able to articulate how they could and would use the knowledge they have gained in the future. One group even explained that if they were lost in the bush, how they would use charcoal to improve water quality!!

It was also encouraging to see so many families in attendance. They were clearly impressed with the exploration, the experimentation and the critical thinking required by this assessment task.

Thank you to our awesome science teaching team, particularly Lachlan Maxwell and Leanne Claridge, for organising a fantastic fair that highlighted the importance of science in our lives and as a curriculum area.

Our students are privileged to have such dedicated teams of teachers who ensure daily learning uses an inquiry approach to a high standard.

Last week also saw our students involved in the 2023 Musical “The Wizard of OZ” attend their camp after it had needed to be postponed from last term. The commitment and work ethic of these students is to be absolutely commended. It was obvious how focussed they were on rehearsing hard and giving their best and the staff were so impressed with how well they took on feedback and improved their skills and abilities over such a short period of time. In my short visit to the camp I got pure joy from observing just how proud students were of what they were producing and how grateful they were to be part of such an amazing opportunity and experience. These opportunities and experiences do not occur without the time, commitment and dedication of some amazing staff and my thanks and appreciation goes to Will Houghton, Milissa Jeffery, Fran Nagy, Owen Cusick and Emily Tutin for ensuring the students grew in their learning and received such a foundational experience.

The musical tickets are on sale now and I encourage everyone to come and see this amazing student led and driven production. It will be a testament to their commitment and hard work and a true demonstration and culmination of the quality learning that has occurred this semester. Tickets are available from: https://www.trybooking.com/CIMIB

Kind regards,

Bicycle and Scooter Security

Bicycle and scooter theft is a reality in society, and Lyneham High is unfortunately not exempt from being targeted.

Our school mitigates this by keeping the bike compound locked through the day (generally from about 9:30am to about 2:30pm) and having a teacher on duty at the bike compound at the end of the day (from about 3:05-3:20pm). Our Building Service Officer team also promptly repair the occasional damage to the external fencing wire.  The compound is left unlocked overnight. Students should not leave bicycles and scooters overnight or during weekends.

Additionally, we urge students to keep their bikes locked with a good quality lock and encourage parents to regularly check with their children that they are using their locks. Periodic reminders about bike security are also given to students through daily notices.

Our staff carry out ad-hoc visual checks of the compound and are always dismayed to see up to 30% of bikes not being locked at all. Some of these bikes even have a chain/lock still wrapped around the handlebars or seat-post (therefore totally unsecure!). Many other bikes are seen to be secured with very cheap/flimsy locks that are easier to pry open. Of course, addressing these measures will not guarantee that a bike won’t be stolen, but they’ll make it considerably more difficult.
Running Festival Food Stall

We would like to thank Long Paddock Eggs, Bungendore, for donating enough eggs for us to supply bacon and egg rolls for our Running Festival. This was a great boon for our food options on the day, supplying eggs for approximately 150 bacon and egg rolls. Not only that, but these are the best free-range eggs, they come from very healthy and happy chooks, and are healthier for us as well.

A massive thank you to Long Paddock Eggs for their generous donation, we really appreciate their ongoing support by catering for our hungry audience and supporting our school fundraising events.
Maths Stationery Requirements

Just a brief reminder about the need for students to bring a pen or sharpened pencil and a scientific calculator to their maths and science classes. Many students have been coming to school this year without a writing implement or calculator and as a result, our faculty resources are disappearing rapidly. The physical action of writing down numbers, equations, and formulas, etc greatly assists with the learning of maths and science concepts and is a common activity at Lyneham High School either in their workbooks or on worksheets. We ask that you please remind your children that they need to ensure these items are brought to school every day (calculators should be labelled). Phones cannot be used in place of a calculator in class.

Should any families be experiencing financial difficulty in meeting these costs, please contact the Principal.
Uniform Shop
Discontinued Items Price Reductions

We have reduced the price of some items in our uniform shop as we are no longer stocking them or there have been changes to the logos.

The standard polo shirt in sky blue is a different fabric/style to the navy/sky and maroon/white standard polos.

The DARE program have changed the last word in their motto from "Enterprise" to "Empathy". Note that for DARE Jersey's M-XXL you receive a free pair of trackies in the same size.

The STAR program moto is the same but we added "Lyneham High School" to the logo on items that did not already include those words. There are a variety of styles and colours from previous years.

Stock is limited. The sizes and quantity (the number in brackets) listed were correct in May.

During week 6, year 8 French and Indonesian students on line 4 held an exciting World Expo in the hall. The theme was festivals and there were plenty of fun activities such as fishing for a worm in blue rice, fortune wheels, games and plenty of food. Here are some of the best photos – congratulations to the students.

Visual Art News

Last term our Visual Art students worked very hard preparing and presenting their artworks online for an audience. They explored ways to enhance their works through layout, colour, borders and text while including artist statements to add connection and meaning. Here are a selection of completed works.
