Hello families and friends

Minor timetable change for students

You would have received an email from the school on Thursday 28 July stating that we have made a decision to start school twelve minutes later, at 9.05am and not have students attend Home Group.  Daily notices will be read and the first roll of the day marked at the beginning of the first lesson.  This measure will reduce staffing pressures and for your child will mean there are fewer disruptions to learning through collapsed classes or minimal supervision when staff are absent from school.  Taking this measure also means that the large number of activities that students participate in such as excursions, camps and performances, can still go ahead.  Please note that the ISR (International Student) Home Group will continue meeting for Home Group every morning, and a separate email has been sent to these families.  An updated timetable will be sent to all students with this change before Monday morning.  We will be reviewing this timetable change towards the end of term 3 and will inform the school community of whether this measure will continue into term 4.

Musical Performance

It’s been a busy start to term 3 with many of the events that we would normally run at school, being up and running again.  On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of the Musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.  The performance was incredible, and a testament to the skill of our students and commitment of the staff involved, who pressed on regardless of many obstacles caused by illness last term.  I would like to especially acknowledge the work of our staff Alex Ferraro, Zach Raffan, Fran Nagy, Heather Rapp, Cheryl Pole and Tim Bowyer, who have all donated a great deal of their time and expertise in ensuring our students had this rich educational opportunity.  A special mention must also go to Loretta Heskett and last semester's Cafe class, who provided an amazing array of Wonka inspired food for opening night.

If you haven’t seen the show there are still tickets for tonight’s performance at 6:30, and Saturday’s performances at 1.30pm and 6.30pm.
Tickets can be booked using this link: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/909559

Winter playground

We have been trying to balance the comfort of students during the cold winter months, with minimising students in the building at recess and lunch.  In light of this, we have moved to a “Winter Playground” model, where, for the winter months, students are permitted to be in the building at recess and lunch, but only in two of the downstairs corridors.  This will cease at the end of winter, when all students will be expected to remain outdoors during breaks, with the exception of wet weather days.

Electronic Devices Policy

Thank you to all families who have supported the implementation of this policy.  Our teachers have already noticed positive changes in students focussing on their learning.

COVID- 19 safety measures

An email was sent home to all families on Wednesday 27 July reminding families of the safety measures in place to try to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on our school community.  This included information about ensuring your child does not attend school if they are sick, encouraging all students to wear a mask and ensuring your child is collecting RAT’s from the front office when required.

Should your child become unwell whilst in class, they should immediately notify their teacher and head to sick bay at the front office. The front office will liaise with you regarding collection or early sign out.

Staff planning days

A reminder that the pupil free staff planning days for Lyneham High this term will be on:

Friday 12 August and Friday 9 September

No learning programs will run on these days for students; however the school will provide minimal supervision for students who cannot work from home on these days.  Please contact the school if your child will be attending school for minimal supervision.

School Psychologist

Unfortunately our school is without a school psychologist at the moment, as Nakiya left to travel overseas at the end of last term.  However, we still have a strong student support area where students can seek assistance and support.  Telehealth support services are available for all families. If your ACT public school aged child or young person requires extra help and assistance, our school psychologists are available to provide support through Telehealth. To access the service, a booking request may be made via an online form or by calling 6205 1559 between 9:00am and 4:30pm.

P&C Meeting

A reminder to our families that the next P&C meeting will be on Tuesday 3 August at 7.00pm. I encourage parents to participate in this valuable forum. More information about this is later in this newsletter.

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 19 August to 9 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
•    An email about the parent survey, including a link to access the survey.; and
•    A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, contact the school and you will be provided a survey link. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the school on (02) 6142 1176.

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Student Injury - Insurance and Ambulance Transport

The ACT Education Directorate does not provide any insurance cover for injury, disease or illness to students resulting from school activities or school-organised excursions. Claims for compensation are met where there is a legal liability to do so. Liability is not automatic and depends on the circumstances in which any injury, disease or illness was sustained.

As there is no automatic insurance cover for personal injury if your child is injured at school or during a school organised activity/excursion you should therefore consider whether taking out personal insurance cover for your child is warranted.

This insurance might cover contingencies including medical/hospital expenses, ambulance transport outside the ACT, and cancellation of transport/accommodation or loss of/damage to luggage.

The ACT Ambulance Service provides free ambulance transport for students who are injured or suddenly become ill at school or during an approved school organised activity within the ACT.

Liability for the Loss, Damage or Theft of Students’ Personal Property at School

Parents and students are advised that Lyneham High School staff will take all reasonable steps to keep personal property safe. However, Lyneham High School does not provide insurance cover to automatically compensate for the loss, damage or theft of bicycles or any other personal property, nor will they be legally liable for their loss.
Parents and students are advised:
  • to avoid bringing valuable property to school,
  • to take steps to insure all valuable items for loss, theft or damage,
  • to use a good quality chain or bar lock to secure bicycles when left at school,
  • that valuable items are brought to school at the personal risk of the owner and that schools decline any responsibility for the damage, loss or theft of students’ personal property, and
  • to report any suspicious activity to school staff.

Family Communications

Earlier this term, a change was made to the School’s administration system enabling additional contacts (with parental responsibility for students) to receive school communications such as emails, newsletters and absence notifications. Please do not hesitate to contact the school by email or on 61421176 if you have any questions about this.
LHS Athletics Carnival Permission

Lyneham High School is holding its annual Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 9 August 2022 at the AIS Athletics Track. This is a whole school event, meaning that there will be no supervision at school on this day.

Please see information sheet below, and refer here for a form which we ask you to complete to provide your permission. If you are unable or unwilling to complete this online permission form, your child can collect a printed copy of the permission form from the front office.

Your support in providing your permission and the $10 payment as soon as possible is greatly appreciated. Options for making the payment are outlined on the permission form.

If your child is not going to attend, please follow normal processes and advise the school of their absence by emailing lynehamhs.absences@ed.act.edu.au or calling 6142 1174.
Languages at Lyneham

English and EALD classes are back to work with year 10s examining documentaries, and year 7 classes starting oral presentations.

A puppet play was held on Monday 25 July for students of Indonesian. It was an enjoyable incursion and the behaviour of participants was respectful.

French students have been lucky to meet Samuel Armstrong, the Grenoble exchange brother of Billy Lane in year 10. Samuel, Billy and Declan Breen have been busy visiting Elective French classes and answering a myriad of interesting questions about life in France and Australia. Samuel's brother participated in the exchange to Lyneham High in 2019. We wish Samuel all the best when he departs Australia on this week. Billy will visit Samuel in Grenoble in the near future.
