School Improvement Plan 2022-2026
We are continuing work on our two key priorities of “improve student writing growth across all year levels” and “equip students to become effective and self-regulated learners”. Staff engaged in further professional learning during week 0 as we take the next steps in our journey and continue to improve student learning outcomes.

Personal Communication Device (PCD) Policy
The Education Directorate introduced a system wide PCD policy that came into effect 2024. Parents received communication about this at the end of term 4 2023 and a more detailed communication went to our parent community prior to students returning. Students were all clearly taken through the policy, what it means for them, and what potential consequences for not adhering to the policy may be. Overall, students have been fabulous especially considering the habit breaking steps related to paying at the canteen or telling the time. We held a Parent Forum in week 3 to answer queries and continue to support families. We have also recently purchased a significant number of school headphones that are compatible with school issued devices so we can continue to engage in our multimodal pedagogies.

New in 2024

  • Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum is now implemented in every learning area across the school.
  • Due to student feedback, we are enacting some changes to the “Spirit sessions”. We have purchased for 2024 ‘The Resilience Project’ which will be trialled term 2-4 with year 8 and 9.
  • The Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) team have revamped and reintroduced a school awards and merit system for students to have their achievements and actions recognised and achieved.

Students have settled back into school and classes really well. On visiting classes, I have experienced focussed and engaged learning spaces. We have had our first whole school assembly (with year 9 having a Year Assembly due to being unable to fit the entire school population in any of our spaces), The swimming carnival was spectacular and was a great demonstration of community and school spirit and pride. STAR camp returned this week buzzing with enthusiasm around the teamwork and challenges experienced and DARE, Musical and Year 7 are busy preparing for their upcoming camp experiences.

The Year 7 Meet the Teacher Afternoon was well attended and a great opportunity for students to show their parents the learning spaces, teachers and learning that encompasses their day. I thank staff and student-helpers for their time to make this experience possible, and I was really pleased to see and meet so many parents.

We held our P&C Annual General Meeting this week and we were thrilled to have all positions nominated filled. I will introduce the new team next Newsletter as I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Sarah Lendon our outgoing president for her dedication, time, patience and persistence through what have been a challenging couple of years for the P&C.

Kind Regards

Jacqui Ford

Talking with our school

Our teachers and school staff work hard every day to provide the best outcomes for every student.

Preparing for great teaching takes time. It is important that our teachers and school staff have time outside their core hours to rest and reset.

Communication with parents and carers is important to us and our staff will always work to get back to your enquiries within a reasonable timeframe. We aim to do this within 3 workings days. If your matter is urgent we will get back to you as quickly as possible.

There is no expectation that teachers respond to queries from families during their personal and family time.

Every student and every family is important to us. By respecting the time of our teachers, you are helping to make time for great teaching.

We want to continue to work closely with you on your child’s learning at school and do our best to respond to you in a timely manner.

We update families on what is happening at our school in a number of ways from information nights, emails, notes and newsletters. We encourage you to stay in touch with our school through these channels.

So how do you initiate contact with us?
For matters related to particular classes, please email the classroom teacher. Your child will be able to advise their name.
For more general matters, please email the Home Group teacher and/or Year Coordinators.
For advising absences (or signing out early), phone or email the absence team.
For all other matters, use the main school email or phone number.
The Contact Us page of our school website provides the contact details for all of these people/teams: https://www.lynehamhs.act.edu.au/contact_us
Translating and Interpreting Service

If you are a parent or carer who needs the use of an interpreter to assist you to communicate with the school, please let us know by phone (6142 1176) or email (lynehamhs@ed.act.edu.au), and we will arrange for the Translating and Interpreting Service to be used.
Signing out early

To sign out early, your child needs a note to leave class:
  • The note could be something you prepare and give to them before school. They simply show the teacher the note at the time required, and take it to the front office to sign out.
  • Alternatively, you could contact the school (preferably via 61421174) and we will send the runner with a “pink note” to the class asking your child to come and sign out.
Things get tricky around recess (11:01 – 11:26) and lunch (1:22 – 2:07) because we don’t have staff available to walk around the playground looking for students. In these cases, please pre-arrange for your child to head to the office at the required time, or ensure to contact us well ahead of time so that we can plan to get a message to them before recess/lunch.

If your child becomes unwell during the day, they should make this known to their teacher, and make their way to the front office/sick bay. Our friendly staff will look after them and, if necessary, contact you to pick them up.
Centre for Advanced Microscopy Tour

At the end of 2023, a group of year 9 students went to the ANU's Centre for Advanced Microscopy! During the tour, students used light microscopes, transmission electron microscopes and a scanning electron microscope to see malaria infected red blood cells, fungus growing on leaves, moth eyes, pond water creatures and alloys. Thank you to the amazing team at the Centre for Advanced Microscopy for the fascinating tour and, in particular, Associate Professor Melanie Rug for making the excursion possible!
DAFF Photo Feature

This week it was discovered that the amazing photography of Akshaya Koganti is featured on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s website. The photo was entered into the Department’s 2023 International Day of Plant Health photo competition, and it’s great to see the photo on display! Here’s the webpage if you’d like to check it out yourself: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/about/news/international-day-of-plant-health-2023#daff-page-main

Languages Report

Welcome to Lyneham High 2024 from the Languages faculty. Here is an overview of what students will be studying in English in term 1.

Year 7:

This term in English we are completing a unit called “Life Stories”. In this unit, we are examining a range of biographical texts to develop personal writing skills with the goal of students creating their own life story snapshot.

To help support your child at home, we would recommend that students keep a journal detailing events in their life to practise personal writing.
Year 8:

This term in English we are completing a unit called “Problematic Stories”. In this unit we are exploring a range of texts such as classic fairy tales to examine if these stories contain themes or ideas that might be outdated and deciding whether or not they have literary value. The aim for this term is to get students to further develop their persuasive analytical skills.

To help support your child at home, we would recommend getting them to read or watch some dated texts like the old Disney animations and have discussions with them about the value of the story.

Year 9:

This term in English we are completing a genre study of Gothic Literature. Over the term, we are going to examine a range of texts that demonstrate the gothic conventions with the end goal of students creating their own gothic narrative.

To help support your child at home, we would recommend watching some Tim Burton films such as The Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands and ask them what is gothic about this text.
Year 10

This term in English we are completing a short stories unit. We are studying a range of short stories to examine and analyse author style; the end goal is for students to develop their own style of writing to produce a short narrative with annotations evaluating their use of language and structure.

To help support students with their learning at home, we would recommend getting your child to read a range of different books. If your child is a reluctant reader, even just reading the first chapter will help their understanding of character and author style.

Year 9 Creative Writing

This term we are completing a unit called "A Calendar Of Tales" where we are examining a range of fictional short stories with a focus on characterisation and narrative structure. The assessment task will be a short narrative that will assess students ability to utilise extensive feedback to create a polished product.

To help support your child at home, we would recommend encouraging them to read a range of fictional texts, getting them to focus on structure and character development.

Year 10 Creative Writing

This term we are completing a unit called "Feminism, Fantasy, Fairy Tales" where we are examining a range of fictional short stories with a focus on examining fairy tales and fantasy through a feminist lens. . The assessment task will require students to create their own fairy tale with a new awareness of gender messages that texts contain.

To help support your child at home, we would recommend encouraging them to read a range of fictional fantasy texts, getting them to focus on gender representation.
Musical Notes!

Welcome to a new year of the Lyneham High School Band program! We are all excited as everything is starting to get underway for the year. This year we welcome Holly Britton to the team. She is a very experienced music teacher and she will be taking the Beginner Band this year as she continues her music teaching journey. Here is a list of which teachers are taking each band to make it easier to contact them if needed.

7 Beginner Band - Holly Britton
7 Concert Band – William Houghton and Sophie Raudonikis
8 Concert Band – William Houghton
9 Concert Band – Sophie Raudonikis
10 Concert Band – Franceska Nagy

Extra-curriculars:
This is a reminder for all students interested in joining an extra-curricular music activity to please do so through their Band Google Classroom page. Here are the activities offered:

Intermediate Jazz Band – Tuesday mornings at 8:00am.
Senior Jazz Band – Friday mornings at 8:00am.
Musical Band – Thursday mornings 8:00am.
Musical Chorus – Thursday afternoons 3:30-4:30pm (Google form on year group google classroom page).

Home Instruments:
We’ve had several students already asking for home instruments – the application process for this will begin this week. Students will need to listen for the announcement in class and check their Google Classroom page.

Tours:
The team are already right in the thick of planning the Band tours that go out later in the year. The permission notes for these will be coming out in the next week or so. There will be more specific information to each tour on these so please keep an eye out for it. If you have any questions, please contact the relevant Band teacher. There is also financial assistance available for families who need it. Contact the front office regarding this if required.

Musical:
Preparations for the Musical ‘Disco Inferno’ are in full swing. Auditions for major parts are happening soon – students will have more information about this in class and on the Google Classroom. The Musical Camp is also happening in week 5.

Runners: Did you know?

Along with other schools, Lyneham High has a long history of having student “runners”.

Runners are an important part of the school’s operational fabric: taking “pink” notes around the school and performing other ad-hoc tasks. If you ring and ask for your child to be sent a message or released from class early, you will often hear our front office staff say, “No worries, I’ll send the runner out.”

Most year 8 students are asked to be a runner once during the year.

While most students enjoy the opportunity to help the school out, we know that it’s not for everyone. We do not choose a student if:
  • there are known conflicting academic/schooling reasons (eg a test or excursion),
  • there are wellbeing or similar concerns that have been expressed to us,
  • a parent/carer has advised that they do not wish for their child to participate.

If you do not wish your child to participate, please advise their home group teacher (refer to the Teaching staff contact list, which is always available from the Contact Us page of the school’s website). Your child can also express this directly to the home group teacher.
Bicycle and Scooter Security

Bicycle and scooter theft is a reality in society, and Lyneham High is unfortunately not exempt from being targeted.

Our school mitigates this by keeping the bike compound locked through the day (generally from about 9:30am to about 2:30pm) and having a teacher on duty at the bike compound at the end of the day (from about 3:05-3:20pm). The compound is left unlocked overnight. Students should not leave bicycles and scooters overnight or during weekends.

Additionally, we urge students to keep their bikes locked with a good quality lock and encourage parents to regularly check with their children that they are using their locks. Periodic reminders about bike security are also given to students through daily notices.

Our staff carry out ad-hoc visual checks of the compound and are always dismayed to see up to 30% of bikes not being locked at all. Some of these bikes even have a chain/lock still wrapped around the handlebars or seat-post (therefore totally unsecure!). Many other bikes are seen to be secured with very cheap/flimsy locks that are easier to pry open. Of course, addressing these measures will not guarantee that a bike won’t be stolen, but they’ll make it considerably more difficult.
Student Injury - Insurance and Ambulance Transport

The ACT Education Directorate does not provide any insurance cover for injury, disease or illness to students resulting from school activities or school-organised excursions. Claims for compensation are met where there is a legal liability to do so. Liability is not automatic and depends on the circumstances in which any injury, disease or illness was sustained.

As there is no automatic insurance cover for personal injury if your child is injured at school or during a school organised activity/excursion you should therefore consider whether taking out personal insurance cover for your child is warranted.

This insurance might cover contingencies including medical/hospital expenses, ambulance transport outside the ACT, and cancellation of transport/accommodation or loss of/damage to luggage.

The ACT Ambulance Service provides free ambulance transport for students who are injured or suddenly become ill at school or during an approved school organised activity within the ACT.
Liability for the Loss, Damage or Theft of Students’ Personal Property at School

Parents and students are advised that Lyneham High School staff will take all reasonable steps to keep personal property safe. However, Lyneham High School does not provide insurance cover to automatically compensate for the loss, damage or theft of bicycles or any other personal property, nor will they be legally liable for their loss.

Parents and students are advised:
  • to avoid bringing valuable property to school,
  • to take steps to insure all valuable items for loss, theft or damage,
  • to use a good quality chain or bar lock to secure bicycles when left at school,
  • that valuable items are brought to school at the personal risk of the owner and that schools decline any responsibility for the damage, loss or theft of students’ personal property, and
  • to report any suspicious activity to school staff.
Safety and Respect in our community

Lyneham High is a big school and for everyone's safety it is important to have some clearly outlined expectations around dropping off and picking up students at school.

We ask parents and carers to:

•  Observe the 40km/h speed restriction during the period from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

•  Not drive into the driveways and carparks to use them as drop off or pick up points. This causes unnecessary congestion and can be very dangerous for the students and adults as they arrive at, or depart from, school.

• Where possible drop off students further along Goodwin Street or even in one of the surrounding streets and have students safely walk the short distance to school.

• Take care at the pedestrian crossings, particularly looking out for cyclists.

• Not stop or park in locations that are dangerous or that impede the flow of traffic (e.g. on the school crossing, on footpaths, or in the driveway of our neighbours across the road).

• Not perform u-turns from the drop off zones along the front of the school.
Help with the cost of schooling and everyday essentials

All ACT public schools can help families meet the costs of schooling or everyday essentials – such as personal hygiene products including sanitary hygiene items, school uniform items, book packs and stationery, school excursions, camps, transport and enrichment activities.

Part of public education’s important objective is making access to education more equitable for all students, regardless of personal circumstances. If you are experiencing a situation that affects your ability to meet the costs of schooling or everyday essentials for your child, we encourage you to talk to us. Families who are looking for help with the costs of schooling can:
  • talk to the school principal or other staff member about their situation
  • have a relative, caseworker, friend or advocate make contact on your behalf
  • contact the Education Directorate ETDStudentWellbeing@act.gov.au.
School Calendar

Did you know the school’s calendar of events (excursions and the like) are maintained as a Google Calendar which is accessible from the front page of the school’s website (see below)? Events are maintained weekly.
