Hello families and friends

5 ways week

Five ways week was a wonderful week of wellbeing. There was a buzz around the school, the weather warmed up for us and events across the week were worthwhile, well participated in and fun! It was great on the Friday to see the culmination of a lot of work and planning by the kids in the student forum. They were rewarded with great success for their time, thought and commitment. A huge thanks goes to Amanda Murtagh, Alison Simmons, and Alex Dashwood for their amazing dedication and energy in support of our students – the opportunity would not have been possible without them.
Footy Colours Day

On Thursday 8 September the school participated in Footy Colour’s Day. It was a fun atmosphere and so lovely for the school to get behind the idea of giving and service to support a charity. It was also a fabulous demonstration of the variety of codes and teams supported across the school.
Snippets from Learning Environments

I was invited into the Year 8 LEAP Maths presentations last week. I was treated to some well prepared and highly professional students taking me through their proposals to AstroTurf the main quad. Whilst there were some complex mathematical calculations involved, what really impressed me was the learning in context and real-world application that was occurring. Students had done some deep thinking about treatment of workforce, environmental impacts, inclusive concepts, persuasive techniques, not for profit organisations and the type of company they would wish to represent. They took their presentations to be awarded the contract very seriously and had really thought about the whole picture as opposed to just the bottom line. What a great learning experience for them and a great real-world application for the maths skills they were mastering.

I was then inspired by the joy I felt, and I started visiting classes in a quest to stay immersed in the learning environment.

I stumbled upon a Year 8 Drama class where I was invited to return in 20 mins to see some performances – and I did just that. The student performances were great. However, the lasting impression was what a quality and safe learning environment created. Students were not only safe to perform, but they were also exceptionally safe and comfortable in the amazing feedback culture that had been developed. Student were receiving positive feedback on their work; they were also receiving strategies for improvement from each other. It was obvious these students had learnt not only the art of providing quality feedback but also the art of receiving it. The respectful way they remained in class to watch a performance that ran into recess (even though they had been provided permission to leave quietly) was a complete testament to a beautifully supportive learning culture and environment.

I then found myself in the kitchen. It was in buzzing with productive activity. The most beautiful part, however, was watching the teacher pop up next to different groups and students and ‘feeding in’ to their learning with suggestions and advice. With a well-timed question or ‘have you thought about?’ or ‘when you do that again…’ she left every group with an idea about how to improve and enhance what they were doing. There was not a student in that class that wouldn’t have known the teacher wanted them to do their best and that she cared about their achievement.

Ride to School

James Etherington has been impressive and instrumental in working towards fulfilling one of his school captain election campaign promises from last year. He is bringing community spirit to Lyneham High by attempting to break an Australian record – the most people riding to school. The day is Thursday week 10 and I would encourage as many people as possible to jump on board and support the initiative by riding to school. The goal is over 600 students and staff riding to school on Thursday 22 September and an incentive is free hot chocolate and the feeling of being involved in something special. I will be driving my bike to within a distance from the school that suits my capabilities and riding to work on that day. I encourage as many as possible to join me.

Kind regards

Be part of Lyneham High School’s Australian record attempt!

On Thursday 22 September (week 10), Lyneham High School will be making an Australian record attempt as part of World Car Free day and to encourage cleaner modes of transport within our community. To break the record we will need over 600 students to ride to school. There will be novelty events, a free bike maintenance workshop, prizes and free hot chocolates for the participants. It is expected that Win TV will be filming the attempt.

Please encourage your child/children to participate in the event. Parents and carers are also encouraged to ride with their students to show support. Save the date!
Languages at Lyneham

Indonesian students have the opportunity to participate in one of two upcoming excursions. Firstly, years 9 and 10 will go to the Australian National University on Friday 16 September to learn about opportunities studying Indonesian. Year 7 will go to the zoo in week 3 term 4 to see animals native to Indonesia.

On Thursday 15 September a French Food Festival will be held for year 8s to play games and come and sample French food. We ask parents to fill in and return the associated notes which have been sent home.
Dr. Gianfranco Conti, a world renowned language teacher and academic, is coming to Lyneham High School on Friday 16 September. He will be teaching year 7 French B as part of a conference he is providing for the French network. This is a wonderful opportunity for our year 7 students.

We’d like to encourage our excellent French and Indonesian students to pursue their language in Elective classes for the full year in years 8, 9 and 10.
Band News

Year 7 Bands in Concert

The year 7 bands have been busy this term, learning many new pieces in preparation for their parent concert that happened last week. The bands were very excited to welcome a huge audience of family and friends to showcase their skills.

The Year 7 Beginner Concert Band opened the concert with a bang and then played a number of crowd favourites such as "Another One Bites the Dust", followed by some old school "Shepherd’s Hey" by Percy Grainger. The audience then joined in with the lyrics of Tequila – and boy did everyone, including the audience and students join in for that!
The Year 7 Concert Band then followed playing a number of pop pieces they have been polishing over the past few weeks. There were clapping features in "Cake By the Ocean", an excellent trumpet solo in "What Makes You Beautiful" and some students getting up to show off their shuffling skills in "Party Rock Anthem"! Both bands performed very well, and the conductors are extremely proud of their progress so far!
Year 7 Concert Band Assembly Performance

The Year 7 Concert Band followed up with a performance at assembly the very next day and demonstrated their discipline and expertise by performing ‘Havana’ and ‘Party Rock Anthem’. The crowd really went off when those shufflers came out again and the band were so energised by this!

Year 7 Tours

Both the Year 7 Concert Band and the Year 7 Beginner Concert Band look forward to their tours to Merimbula and Batemans Bay respectively next term which are shaping up to be a fantastic opportunity. Students will continue to build their repertoire and performance skills for this amazing experience! Please refer to the school calendar for those dates and the band conductors will be in touch shortly with more details.

Year 9 Melbourne Tour

On Sunday 21 August at 6am, 42 bleary eyed but excited students (and parents) arrived at LHS to pack a bus full of luggage and musical equipment for what would be their very first band tour since becoming students of LHS in 2020. We departed right on cue at 7am and had several stops along the way. We arrived at the Big 4 Caravan Park at Coburg at around 4:30pm and quickly dropped our luggage off before heading to the supermarket to do our grocery shopping for the week.

The students were lined up to perform 8 times during our stay in Melbourne but due to the very unpredictable weather, we had to cancel one and a half performances. The students performed at The Old Treasury, Parliament House, Esplanade North, Coburg Primary School, St Fidelis Primary School, and Carlton Primary School. Also of note was the formal performance of the trip at the Victorian Schools Music Festival and they were awarded a Gold for their performance.

It was not all about the performances though, the students were able to participate in some fun activities whilst living it up like a Melbournian. Monday night was Karaoke at K-Box, Wednesday night was mystery night, and the students were incredibly lucky enough to see the Musical Hamilton at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Thursday Night was silver night, and the students went out to have dinner at the Royal Melbourne Hotel. Before we travelled back on Friday, what trip to Melbourne is not complete without a visit to the Queen Victoria Markets.

We all piled on the bus at 12pm for a long but enjoyable trip home. We arrive back at LHS with the sounds of the school song sung by the band. They were bleary eyed and excited to be home to tell their parents and carers of the amazing experiences they had on their first band trip ever.

A massive thank you to all that made this trip possible, Mr Tim Bowyer, Alec Coulson, the amazing LHS music faculty and of course, you the parents.

Yuma!
(Hello – in Ngunnawal language)

Welcome to the August edition of Rights in ACTion. We have had a very busy month getting out and about in the community! Speaking to children and young people is one of my favourite parts of being the ACT Children and Young People Commissioner, and I have been lucky enough to have had a number of chances to do that this month. Some of the events I went to are the CareersXpo, a Raiders game and taking part in story time at a couple of libraries during book week. Check out the photos from some of these events on pages 2 and 4.

We are also now more than half way through our consultation with children and young people on racism in the ACT. Letting children and young people know what we are hearing is an important part of this process, so we will continue to include information about what we are hearing in our newsletters over the next few months. Check out some of the ideas that students at the CareersXpo came up with on page 3.

If you know a child or young person who would like to have their say about racism, the survey is open for another couple of weeks to any child or young person aged 5-24 years who lives, studies, works, or plays sport in the ACT. They can answer the survey by clicking the button below.

The Climate Choices Schools Awards recognises the people, projects and schools that are making a difference. If this sounds like you or someone you know – a teacher, student, group or school-community member – nominate them for an award. Learn more about the award categories on the Everyday Climate Choices website. Nominate online by 11.59 pm, Monday 31 October 2022.
