Hello families and friends

Year 9 Big Day In

The Year 9 Big Day In was on last Thursday. It was a great day for year 9 students where they stepped outside of their usual learning schedule to start to look forward to next year and beyond. The day consisted of purpose-built activities, discussions and group tasks on the topics of leadership, learning skills and year 10 and beyond. This day was also the platform used to springboard into the School Captaincy process to nominate as a School Captain candidate for 2023. It was fabulous to see the engagement of students and the productive conversations that resulted for the day. Thanks go to the Year 9 Wellbeing team for their time and coordination of this valuable experience for our students.

Science Fair

The Year 7 Science Fair occurred for LHS students last Friday. There was a wide variety of questions investigated by students and some of the results were really intriguing. The students demonstrated their growing knowledge and application of the scientific investigation process and communicated this through some well-designed scientific posters outlining their research question, process and finding/s. All participants are to be congratulated on their learning. A big thankyou goes to the Science learning area staff for coordinating the opportunity and supporting the students to achieve their best.

Wear it Purple Day

Today is Wear It Purple Day. This is a day when we rally around our LGBTQIA+ students, staff and families to demonstrate they are welcomed and celebrated for exactly who they are!

5 Ways Week

5 Ways Week (week 7) is a LHS public health mission to support people’s general health and wellbeing.

The 5 Ways of Wellbeing focussed on across the week are:
-CONNECT (talk, listen, be there)
-BE ACTIVE (do what you can to enjoy what you do. Move your mood).
-TAKE NOTICE (remember the simple things that give you joy)
-KEEP LEARNING (embrace new experiences)
-GIVE (your time, your words, your presence)

The timetable of what is occurring across the week is:
Satisfaction Survey

The School Satisfaction and Climate Survey is an important tool used to underpin school improvement practices.

The parent and carer survey was distributed to parents and carers via email on Friday 19 August, and is accessible from any computer or mobile device. I strongly encourage all parents and carers to make time to complete the survey to assist us in continually reflecting on and improving the quality of educational services we provide. For more details about the survey, please refer to last Friday’s email and/or the article later in this newsletter.

Kind regards

Jacqui Ford
Next P&C Meeting

P&C meetings are held at 7pm on Tuesday of every week 3 and week 8 of term. For the foreseeable future, they are now only held online via the  Microsoft Teams meeting at this link. The next meeting is on Tuesday 6 September.
Electives Expression of Interest and Subject Selections Timeline

Current students in years 7, 8 and 9 are about to undertake the Electives Expression of Interest (EOI) Round.

This EOI is how students let the school know what elective subjects they have a genuine interest in and would be happy to study in 2023 if subjects are available.  Students will fill out a Google Form that will be available on their year group Google Classroom page from Tuesday week 7. The form is not a subject selection, this will occur in term 4 when the timetable has been built considering the EOI data.

Student responses will help the school understand what subjects have strong interest. Student responses will help determine which lines the electives are offered on and if multiple classes are offered. For example, electives with high expressions of interest will not all appear on the same line as this could restrict student’s ability to study their preferences.

Students must take this expression of interest seriously.  If a subject area does not produce strong responses from this survey the school may not offer a subject for them to select next term.  Please encourage your students to think carefully about this expression of interest.

Students currently in year 6 commencing at the school next year do not participate in this process as they have a set electives timetable in year 7.

The main source of communication for families will be our Subject Selections page of Lenni. For students, it will be their year group Google Classroom page. Students should see their year team if they have not yet joined the page and students are encouraged to have notifications tuned on. You can find our full timeline on Lenni, as well as information on how our timetable works so you know how many expressions of interest students need to make. In the meantime, please find some key dates below:

Thank you for supporting your children to understand these processes before they undertake them. We appreciate your patience as we approach this busy time. Please allow for 48hours for a response to any email enquiries made during this timeline.

Kind Regards

Seek Information Sessions for Students
In 2018 we commenced the Seek class, a project-based inquiry learning class in year 8. This class combines English, Mathematics, HaSS and Science curriculums into interdisciplinary units of learning that develop social cohesion and deep thinking.

This term we will be seeking applications from interested students in years 7, 8 and 9.

We will hold an information session for all interested students after the week 7 whole school assembly. At the end of this information session, students will be given a link in the form of a flyer to complete the application form.

Applications are due September 9 at the end of week 8, a final session will be held during week 8 for students to attend and ask any further questions. Students are asked to listen to the daily notices to find out when this will be held.

Students selected for Seek cannot participate in LEAP or STAR/DARE  without relinquishing their placement in their current program due to timetable restraints.

The Seek Team
Please note, due to the large number of applications received, the SEAL team is unable to provide any feedback regarding non-selection into the program.
Languages at Lyneham
Year 7 English students have had great fun dressing up Shakespeare style as part of this unit. As well as having a good time, they now have an improved awareness of Elizabethan fashion.

Year 9 English students will soon undertake an excursion to the National Museum and year 8 classes have been studying poetry and poetic devices.

French students just finished making films on topics being studied, or poetry. Congratulations to Shasta Bignell in year 8, Hana Walker in year 8, Misa Bui in year 10, Sara Eleutheria in year 10 , Olina Mastuki in year 10 and Anna Vahey in year 10, who have submitted readings for the Alliance Française Concours de la Poésie. We are hoping they will be as successful as in previous years.
Indonesian Program

August 17 is a very special day in the Indonesian program calendar. It marks the 77th Indonesian Independence Day. To mark this event, our students have competed in the lumba krupuk (cracker eating competition), lumba lari (running competition), lumba balon (balloon competition) in the quest to be the best team of all time. There were many prizes to be won and students had an amazing time racing against their classmates from various Indonesian classes. We would like to wish all our friends and families a Happy Indonesian Independence Day!
