Hello families and friends

It has been a lovely four weeks with students able to undertake their learning onsite and excursions and special activities being able to go ahead.  We have managed to maintain strong COVID safety approaches and have, most importantly, had students learning, laughing and engaging in the ‘fun stuff’ school can bring – lunchtime fun, performances, sporting competitions, creating artworks … the list goes on.

You have already received correspondence from me about the various ways we are trying to keep our staff and students COVID safe and what our plans will be if we have a staffing shortage. Our focus is keeping kids learning and achieving, so please let us know if you have any questions or worries about how this is happening.

And wow! What a fabulous athletics carnival we had. We showed up. We participated. We exceled. We demonstrated school spirit and pride. Thank you to all students and staff who attended and helped make the Athletics Carnival the success that it was. I had a great day, as did the students. A big thankyou to our organisers for their dedication, commitment, organisation and leadership. I had some great conversations with students and staff and it was unanimous that the venue was a winner and that days such as this are an important part of the school year. Also, everyone was super-pleased for PE Team that the weather was perfect 😊

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for their support of the new electronic devices policy. We have seen a fabulous amount of respect for the new guidelines from our students. As I walk around classrooms I have only once needed to ask a student to place their phone in their bag and I am already seeing the impact on classroom environments and student learning with the change in policy. We appreciate your ongoing support.

Kind regards

Jacqui Ford
Next P&C Meeting

P&C meetings are held at 7pm on Tuesday of every week 3 and week 8 of term. For the foreseeable future, they are now only held online via the  Microsoft Teams meeting at this link. The next meeting is on Tuesday 6 September.
Bicycle Security

Bicycle theft is a reality in society, and Lyneham High is unfortunately not exempt from being targeted.

Our school mitigates this by keeping the bike compound locked through the day (generally from about 9:30am to about 2:30pm) and having a teacher on duty at the bike compound at the end of the day (from about 3:05-3:20pm). Our Building Service Officer team also promptly repair the occasional damage to the external fencing wire.

Additionally, we urge students to keep their bikes locked with a good quality lock and encourage parents to regularly check with their children that they are using their locks. Periodic reminders about bike security are also given to students through daily notices.

Our staff carry out ad-hoc visual checks of the compound and are always dismayed to see up to 30% of bikes not being locked at all. Some of these bikes even have a chain/lock still wrapped around the handlebars or seat-post (therefore totally unsecure!). Many other bikes are seen to be secured with very cheap/flimsy locks that are easier to pry open. Of course, addressing these measures will not guarantee that a bike won’t be stolen, but they’ll make it considerably more difficult.
LHS Term 2 Sports Report

Lyneham High School has enjoyed a very busy return to term 2 in school sport with many of our students involved in one day carnivals and interstate sporting competitions.

Running Festival

Congratulations to all students who competed at the Running Festival on Wednesday 4 May. Despite the anticipated rain, our students didn’t disappoint, running in wet and cold conditions. Our PE sessions have been very popular and are great preparation for our events. It goes to show that if you put in the time and show up, you get the results! There were plenty of personal best times, with the highest qualifiers going through to the Northside Cross Country Carnival & ACT Cross Country. A huge thank you to the all LHS staff for their support on the day. Congratulations to all of our Running Festival Age Champions for 2022:

U/12 Girls Zoe Grambauer, U12 Boys Aiden Isbister, U13 Girls Paige Linard, U13 Boys Nithin Naveen, U14 Girls Matilda Buttel, U14 Boys Ollie Barker, U15 Girls Zeke Goshti, U15 Boys Zachary Barwell, U16 Girls Lizzie Jagla and U16 Boys Jett Barker.
Beach Volleyball

Congratulations to the following students: Gabi Dahms, Maddi Blakey, James Etherington and Will Thomson for winning the ACT Beach Volleyball Schools Tournament. The event was a great opportunity for our 12 LHS teams to test themselves against some strong beach volleyball teams.

AFL Boys & Girls

Lyneham High School entered a boys and girls team into the Northside AFL Competition held at the Amaroo Oval. The girls team narrowly lost in the final, however they demonstrated excellent skills and sportspersonship over the course of the competition. Our boys team placed 3rd overall in the group stage. Thank you to both Nick Kelly and Dean Cavouto for coaching the teams on the day.

Football NSW Schools Futsal Regionals Campbelltown & Wagga

The Boys Year 7/8 Futsal Team played on Wednesday 25 May at Minto Indoor Sports Stadium. The team performed admirably throughout the tournament, recording 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in the group stage. They qualified for the quarter finals only to narrowly lose their quarter final 3-2 to Ambarvale High School in extra time. Congratulations to the team for demonstrating such excellent sportspersonship and a competitive attitude!

On Wednesday 1 June the Boys Year 9/10 Futsal Team represented Lyneham High School in the Football NSW Futsal Regional Championships in Wagga. The team performed impressively throughout the tournament winning all 5 of their games and finishing first in the championship. The result qualified the team for a position at the State Championships in Windsor held in July. Congratulations to all of the students involved for a great sporting achievement!

Northside Volleyball

Lyneham High School entered several girls and boys volleyball teams into the Intercollege Northside Volleyball Competition held at Lyneham Hockey Centre. Overall all teams performed admirably throughout the group stage of the competition. In the final stages of the competition our Girls 9/10 Volleyball Team were knocked out of the semi with Canberra High School. Overall this was a pleasing result given that many of our students had never played together before and will certainly benefit from the experience.

Both the years 7/8 & 9/10 (senior) boys teams will be proceeding to the ACT finals.

ACT Volleyball

After a successful northside competition for both the junior and senior boys, both teams were excited for a wonderful day of possibilities in the ACT finals day. Both teams were extremely successful in the round games and proceeded to the semis and then onto the ACT final. The juniors unfortunately went down in the final to Canberra High School but improved both individually and as a team. Well done boys and to Yolanda/Roger Rosser who coached the boys on each day respectfully. The year 9/10 boys played Brindabella Christian School in the final after losing to them in each of the round games and at northside. The boys lost the first set and then composed themselves and went out to win the final in a nail biter ending 15-13 in the third and final set. A massive congratulations to all boys including WIll Thomson, James Etherington, Luca Drury, Tiernan Miller, Liam Deegan, Arlo Smith, Harper Smee, Zeke Marr, Ronan Gianquito & Darko Parcon.
It was a very busy term with many highlights across a whole spectrum of sports and we hope to continue to see students using the opportunity to sign up for School Sport in Term 3. Credit must go to the PE Staff and outside volunteer helpers, who do so much to support our students across the full range of sports and physical activities.

Happy Term 3!

Engaging Parents in Careers Conversations workshops

There will be a face to face workshop on Wednesday 17 august from 5-7pm at Exhibition Park as part of the CareersXpo. There is also a webinar on Tuesday 23 August from 6-7pm. For more information click here.

Work Experience

One of the best ways to prepare for the labour (work) market is to undertake workplace learning (work experience) in an industry area you are thinking about as a possible future career.

Spending time in the workplace can help you understand what is involved in a particular industry or occupation. Workplace learning can bring relevance to your school learning, test your career ideas, improve your self confidence and at the same time provide evidence for your career portfolio.

Who can do WEX? Anyone in years 9 and 10.

Where can I go? You can do work experience anywhere that will take you.  (most trade areas require completion of a White Card (OHS) Induction course and Asbestos Awareness course prior to starting).

How long is WEX? We recommend a minimum of 5 days to get a real feel for the industry/ occupation. Some places will agree to  5 days in a row, while others might like you to come 1 day a week for 5 weeks.

When can I go? Anytime except busy assessment periods. Make sure you chat to your teachers/family.

How do students organise it?
  • Chat to friends/ family- network
  • Ring around or drop into local businesses
  • Sit in the careers room at lunch time with Ms Dashwood and make phone calls

How do I find out more?
Read the following guide for more information or contact Alex Dashwood (careers teacher) on 6142 1176 or email alexandra.dashwood@ed.act.edu.au.

ACT Instrumental Music Program
Secondary Student Extension Ensembles - 2023
The ACT Instrumental Music Program is seeking students who will be in year 7 to year 12 in ACT public schools in 2023 to audition for secondary extension ensembles.

Junior Concert Band: years 7-8 students in ACT public schools in 2023
Senior Concert Band: years 9-12 students in ACT public schools in 2023
Percussion Ensemble: years 7-12 students in ACT public schools in 2023
Senior Concert Choir: years 7-12 students in ACT public schools in 2023

Auditions will be held online in term 4 (October 31 – November 4).
All audition requirements and pieces will be available on the IMP website by the end of term 3.

The ensembles are an excellent opportunity for hard-working, skilled and committed young musicians to work together in an enriching environment. The groups are active performance ensembles and the families of students auditioning will need to be prepared to make a strong commitment to rehearsal and performance attendance for the year.

Further details and information about how to apply for an audition are available from the Instrumental Music Program website at http://www.imp.act.edu.au/our_ensembles/auditions
