Debating & Public Speaking

Lyneham High School has a strong history in debating and public speaking.
  • The school takes part in the ACT Debating Union competitions:
  • The Junior Ford Trophy aimed at Year 7 and 8 students
  • The Murray trophy aimed at Year 9 and 10 students.

In 2005, Lyneham won the Ford Trophy Grand Final and were runners up in the Murray Grand Final.  Each year we aim to register four teams per competition, one team representing each year level.  Several of our students have been nominated each year as best speakers at the end of each season. Students who enjoy the challenge of public speaking, but do not want to debate, are encouraged to enter a variety of public speaking competitions available in the ACT.  Rostrum and the ACT Junior Public Speaking competitions are the two most popular events. In 2003, Samantha Fernando (Year 10) won the latter event.
