Vocational Education and Training  (VET)

VET courses offer students the opportunity to experience vocationally oriented courses that comply with the Australian National Training Authority requirements.  Students gain practical skills that equip them for work while still at school. Competencies and   Certificates achieved are nationally recognised and provide students with a sound foundation for further study and training in these and other VET areas.

Vocational courses differ from other high school courses in that they:

  • have competency based assessment
are designed to meet industry training needs and requirements and
are accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework for industry

Lyneham High students are offered VET programs in :

  • Information Technology
    Hospitality
    Business Services
    Tourism

Information Technology
Students are able to attain competencies for a Certificate I in IT through the year 10 Computing electives.  This is useful for whether or not students intend to continue in Information Technology.

Café Hospitality
This is an industry based course which focuses on the café component of the hospitality industry.  A strong practical component with emphasis on Café style food and beverage preparation and presentation.

Tourism & Business Services
Business Services and Tourism are both Year 10 SoSE  options covering the respective industry knowledge as well as technology skills, communication skills, workplace safety etc.  Both have a work-placement component

Work Experience

All year 10 students are eligible to go on work experience.  This is a valuable experience for students moving into the next phase of their schooling or vocation. VET students will organise their work-placement through the WEX Coordinator.  Blue-Ticket courses are offered throughout the year.  All Building and Constructions Industry placements require this training for insurance cover.

The Careers Room is open some lunchtimes and appointments can be made to discuss career related issues such as Resume writing, interview techniques, course and college advice as well as Work Experience. The Work-Experience (WEX) Coordinator is available to assist students selecting a work-placement and booking it through the ACT Dept of Educations Work Experience Database.
