PHYSICAL EDUCATION and HEALTH
There is increasing recognition of the importance of living an active, healthy life and of the need to make informed, responsible decisions. Physical Education and Health at Lyneham High School gives students the Knowledge, skills, processes, values and attitudes required to develop a better quality of life.
Physical Education and Health focuses on the development of the whole person. It contributes to the individual's emotional, mental, physical and social well being.
Physical Education and Health helps students develop positive attitudes towards their physical and health activity. It encourages them to make choices that contribute to living an active, healthy life.
Physical Education and Health enables students to develop strategies to manage their physical and health well being. It encourages them to accept themselves as they grow and change and to promote their own and others' worth. They explore and clarify individual, family and cultural beliefs, values and attitudes to assist in making choices and taking appropriate actions.
YEAR 7:
Year 7 provides students with a tast of the major sports concentrating on skill acquisition through minor games. Emphasis is on throwing, catching, hitting, kicking and running skills through a variety of games encompassing court, target, invasion, cross country and field sports.
In Health, topics include:
Making Friends, Time Management, The Health of the Individual, Health food Habits, Physical fitness.
YEAR 8:
Students consolidate and develop their skills through major sports units like:
fitness, softball, cricket, volleyball, cross-country, soccer, football skills, netball, basketball, dance, athletics, tennis and touch. Safety and First Aid, Alcohol, Tolerance and Resilience, Caring for your skin.
In Health, students investigate topics relating to:
Safety, Skin, Alcohol, Human Sexuality and Rock and Water which is a course designed to increase self control, self esteem and self confidence.
YEAR 9:
Students are introduced to a number of more unusual sports. Further consolidation of their gross motor skills at a higher level is intended while developing knowledge and skills of new and more unusual sports.
Possible sports covered include:
European handball, badminton, softball,lacrosse, oz-tag, cross country, dance, athletics, golf, table tennis, volleyball and Sport Education.
Students also investigate a number of Health topics including:
Modern Disease, Human Sexuality, Health Agencies; Drugs
YEAR 10:
Units offered in Year 10 are more recreational based. Such units include:
Flag Football, Futsal, Archery, Golf, Table Tennis, Dance, Athletics, Ultimate Vortex, Cross Country and Sport Education.
In Health, students address topics including:
Sexuality and Relationships, Road Ready, Mental Health, health of the individual, Promoting Healthy Active Lifestyles.
SCHOOL SPORT
Lyneham High is proud of its success in school and ACT competitions. Students have the opportunity to represent the school in the sport/s of their choice.
Some of the sports on offer include:
cricket, triathlon, badminton, volleyball, swimming, athletics, oz-tag, touch, netball, soccer, futsal, basketball, rugby union, AFL, rugby league, equestrian, Indoor cricket, tennis, rock climbing, orienteering, table tennis, cycling, hockey, golf, mountain biking and waterpolo.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Outdoor Education is an elective subject offered in years 8, 9 and 10. It provides challenges and rewards that develop individual skills as well as fostering teamwork.
It is designed to introduce students to outdoor adventure activities and it encourages students to evaluate risk, demonstrate organisational ability and practice skills to preserve and enjoy wilderness environments. The skills students gain enable them to take part in satisfying lifetime recreational pursuits.
Some activities offered include:
snorkelling/scuba diving, bushwalking,rockclimbing, canoeing, first aid,abseiling, skiing/snowboarding, surfing,
caving, water safety, mountain biking and minimal impact camping
PRINCIPLES OF SPORT EDUCATION
Principles of Sport Education is a one semester elective program which provides students with the fundamentals of coaching and athletic performance.
The students will be introduced to the principles involved in the following areas:
Physiology and Anatomy, factors affecting performance, training methods, sports safety, group management, communication, teaching sport skills to different populations and the roles and responsibilities of a coach.
As part of this elective program, students will gain hands on coaching experience at sessions conducted with neighbouring primary schools and assist at a variety of sporting activities.
SPORTS SCIENCE
Sports Science has been designed specially for students with proven academic focus and sporting interest. Sports Science is essential to the Human Movement Course and has been endorsed by College Human Movement teachers. As part of this course, elite athletes will learn about their bodies, ensuring maximal
performance for many years to come.
Units will include: Fitness Principles, Basic Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology,Strength and Conditioning, Sociology, Sports Psychology, Nutritional Science, Rest and Recovery, Sports Medicine and Biomechanics.
