LANGUAGES
ENGLISH
English at Lyneham allows students to develop an appreciation of the fine traditions of the English language. We study all aspects of English including:
-
poetry, novel and drama in various forms and styles.
Excursions to events such as Bell Shakespeare’s performances enrich the course every year. To enhance their learning and appreciation of literature all students are encouraged to pursue private reading for pleasure. Public speaking is strongly supported, with several keen debating teams participating in the ACT competitions. There are also opportunities for individual participation in events such as Rostrum. Writing is an important element of our curriculum. Students practise all aspects of the written form so that increasingly complex tasks are completed to a very high standard.
- Students are encouraged to take part in a range of competitions including the Australasian English and Writing Competitions.
The school hosts a wide variety of extra activities.
- In the past we have run ‘The Writers’ Retreat’, an ‘Evening With Shakespeare’ and invited guest speakers to the school on a regular basis to enhance the learning experience.
FRENCH
Learning French is a rewarding and challenging experience which encourages improved literacy, analytical thinking and intercultural awareness.
While exploring the language and culture of the French-speaking world, students develop a greater understanding of their own language. As early as Year 7, this includes the skills of basic conversation, deciphering word meanings and their origins, and actively increasing vocabulary. Our resources and learning activities are carefully chosen to engage teenage students with a wide range of interests and abilities. Interactive, motiving and current ICTs are embedded in research and language lessons.
- Students complete a one-semester course in Year 7. In Years 8-10, French is an elective subject.
-
The French course is also greatly enhanced by regular opportunities to participate in food-tasting, cooking, theatre and celebration days.
-
We organise excursions to French-speaking countries in Years 8 – 10, giving our students invaluable immersion experience
THE STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
The Student Development Centre provides a quiet, supported environment for small group, individual and one-to-one teaching and learning. Students find that time in the Student Developmentis pleasant and productive and that they benefit from the opportunity to work in a small, secure environment with immediate teacher assistance.
The Student Development Centre is utilised in a number of ways:
- Teachers may send small groups of students to work on a group activity eg. a debating topic, a group project, a group presentation.
- Students can be referred by teachers to come to the Study Centre for individual help with work from any subject area.
Students come on a regular basis for intensive individual assistance to develop literacy, numeracy or organisational skills. Individual literacy programs based on Scaffolding Literacy are provided in the Student Development Centre. ESL students attend for extra assistance.
